I was in middle school during the era & was very much in the pocket for Wizard Magazine. Wizard actually played into the kayfabe of the Thunderbolts premise. There was a featured article with Bagley design sketches & discussion with Kurt Busiek. The article portrayed the book as a very traditional, back-to-basics title. The fake-out in the Wizard article definitely contributed to my surprise & enjoyment of the reveal at the end of T-Bolts issue one.Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16001607012819941617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4651613396162106161.post-41823080090261043322020-11-08T18:44:55.155-08:002020-11-08T18:44:55.155-08:00The New Warriors! You guys are probably tired of me gushing about this series and team, so I won't do it again. You get it.

As far as a team of castoffs, I'd also suggest the JLI. In spite of Batman's inclusion, the cast overwhelmingly was characters without solo books or soon-to-be canceled. So that's my pick.

And of course, Firestar is the best comic character originating outside comics. But another great one is Kaldur'ahm/Aqualad from the Young Justice cartoon. And in my head, Barbara Gordon Batgirl is first a Batman '66 character (Sept 1967), even though I know she debuted in the comics first (Jan 1967). But dang! That's a fast jump from comics to TV!

Another New Warriors note: I really enjoyed the whole team's appearance in one issue of the Busiek/Perez Avengers, and also sad because odds were not good for Busiek to write an ongoing for the Warriors. That issue was so good, but Busiek was way too busy for it. Sigh.

Excellent episode, Pile Readers! I would also say the backup stories in #2-11, giving the original team members' origins are part of that. They had no backstory before their appearance in X-Men, and it really let me connect to the team so fast. Love it. So it's hard to narrow down my favorite Alpha Flight to smaller than #1-12.

But I have an incredibly soft spot for #6 (Snow Blind), #9-10 (Sasquatch vs Super-Skrull because OMG THAT FIGHT WAS PHENOMENAL), and #11-12. (which I read in opposite order because I didn't find #11 on the racks at the time, so um, Spoilers younger me!)

And yeah, I ain't really a horror guy, which made Mantlo's run hard for me to enjoy. I tried and hung in until #50, which is much longer than I probably should have. IMHO, the mini holds up as one of the best mini-series ever. The ongoing can be a little hard me to take nowadays, with the extreme level of soap opera plots going on. But I do look back on it fondly for what it was.

This specific issue certainly has the drama amped up to 11. (Ultron-11, that is.) The crazy turn of Mark wanting to reconcile with Hank has interesting potential. But I do think this was the story Englehart wanted to tell. No lingering on the relationship, just a quick tug at the heart strings and move on, re-establishing Ultron as a threat. It seems like the kind of curveball he'd throw at us readers.

But what is it about Ultron losing his head? If I'm remembering right, the first Ultron story finished with his head on an empty lot, with a kid using it like a soccer ball. I read it in an Avengers Treasury Edition, and definitely the first Ultron story I ever read. Biggest threat in the universe, can't keep his head on.

Here you managed to link this story to both Secret Wars I and II, and still missed the biggest link. When Wonder Man gets his new costume in #12, he also gets a new hairdo, dying it black and getting a perm, totally stealing the Beyonder's 'do! Because that seals the deal on how *awful* the new look is.

Great episode, of course! Scott is kidnapped by Mystique and left in a desert without his visor or glasses. This is right in line with your "hero versus nature" comment, and it's excellent.

On a different front, when Cyclophoenix is tearing Doom apart, I immediately thought of MSHSW #10, with Doom trying to fight The Beyonder and basically gets dissected. There's a big visual parallel between these scenes, so that has to be intentional by Hickman. Love to listen while driving to the cottage or mowing the lawn.

Doom is the best villain, and I agree that the reason SWII stunk, among other things, is that Doom was not the central character.

My feeling is that not only does Doom want to be the most powerful being in all of the multiverse, I think he truly enjoys cuckolding Reed.

He's taken his wife as the ultimate spoils of war. Not just his wife but his children as well. I don't really think about Victor and Stephen's relationship too deeply. It's played as a king (the ruler) and his chief of staff (the person who actually runs the kingdom). Sure, there's some fun nuances to the writing of their dialog, but it's the rare thing in this story which I take at face value. Doom's the boss, and Strange the lackey but a very powerful lackey who "knows where the bodies are buried." That last part IS literal, as Strange has Reed's life raft!

Ok, 8 years. Franklin might still be younger than 8 (hard to keep track), and Valeria is definitely less than 8. So are they Victor's biological children, or Reed's? I contend completely that they are Reed's, and their existence is totally Doom resurrecting them from 616, and manipulating their minds. Same with Sue. Because that's just yet another way for Doom to assert his dominance over Reed. Not creating a different version of his family, but co-opting Reed's actual family and making them love him. It's such a Doom move, it has to be the case.

Till next time, Beyondists!Tim Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01930515973080943337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4651613396162106161.post-45973169118485183622020-07-16T07:07:09.615-07:002020-07-16T07:07:09.615-07:00Thanks as always Tim! He built towards his full power set rather than having it since jump. He also had a childhood and relationship with a mentor that fleshed him out more. You can see how when flash goes to adaption in TV. They make Barry Allen the Flash but give him a distinctly Wall West power development arc. Even the whole death of his mom angle of recent years for Barry smacks of a mirror to Wally's troubled parental relationships. That gave me the chance to read Wally as Flash from issue #1 of his series.

So I agree with all of your thoughts on Wally vs Barry, and the creative teams on this volume. I like the stories the Speed Force allowed, so I guess I'm pro-SF. Mark Waid's run is my favorite, but this issue defined W.M-L's run so I'll always have huge love for this period. Just so great!

Big yes to issue #1 being a classic Flash comic. The YJ cartoon episode blew me away, because it was so good, and remarkably very faithful to the comic showing just how good it was. Excellent call back!

Great episode! But it's weird that I can remember before Beta Ray Bill, because Bill was the first "other Thor", and now there have been "other Thors" in the comics longer than "one and only Thor".

Now another funny bit to me, as much as I love Storm the Goddess of Thunder, I have to remember that her hammer was created by Loki. So it's never been established if Ororo could lift Mjolnir. I tend to think she'd be worthy, but it's not been shown. So is the version here an Ororo with a Loki hammer? Or is she holding a Mjolnir-ish hammer with the Thor-worthy requirement? Deciphering Doom's fan fic is not for the faint of heart.

Ok, so to my knowledge, Byrne introduced Doom's respect for Sue, for her "fire" of spirit. But that didn't translate to romantic interest in my opinion. So when did this become a thing? Doom has certainly never taken it easy on Sue in battle before, or offered "marry me and I'll spare them" trope, or spared her from torture/captivity. So to make him remake reality with her as his wife, 1) I don't buy, and 2) EEEEWWWWWWW!

Excellent show again, Beyondists!Tim Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01930515973080943337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4651613396162106161.post-39451530820421002752020-06-06T18:42:50.381-07:002020-06-06T18:42:50.381-07:00I was buying Byrne's FF when I could from the ...I was buying Byrne's FF when I could from the spinner racks, but missed a lot and only managed to backfill them after She-Hulk joined the team. This was an issue I missed. But wow, I loved it! Especially with the story being from Sharon's point-of-view, like you guys noted. It was such a novelty in my superhero comics. So good.

One thing I enjoyed in Byrne's run was his using the original Fantasticar rather than the upgraded model. Now that I'm reading the early FF issues along with Make Ours Marvel, it was a surprise to see the flying bathtub was only around for the first year before being replaced. I love the wonkiness and simplicity of its design, so it's great seeing it in his run.

So the Skrull milk replenishes itself. Reed's anti-Skrull enzyme replenishes itself. Just like old times, and I'm loving it.

I actually got on board with Levitz Legion close to its end (the crossover with Byrne's Superman), but a friend sold me the Great Darkness Saga, and I worked hard to backfill as many issues as I could. I do want to read the Baxter series as a DCU app project, but I haven't started yet. Maybe now is the time, thanks to this issue. Yep, this was pretty standard Levitz Legion, so that's awesome.

During the podcast, there was a moment when Greg said "Colossus, uh, Colossal Boy." Inadvertently perfect callback to Secret Wars and Beyond, with Kitty Pryde/Colossus/Zsaji instead of Violet/Colossal Boy/Yera!

So which is worse? Gym staying with Yera, or Johnny Storm leaving Leeja? Both marriages under false pretenses.

And see, that whole situation explains Vi's behavior in the game room. Yes, she's gruff and tough by this point, but she is still very angry about Yera impersonating her, AND at Gym for staying married to her. But she's trying not to make a big deal about it for the sake of the team. Gym is blockheaded enough to not realize what's going on, let alone do something about it. And he totally should be the one to try and clear the air with Vi.

It's to Levitz's credit that he doesn't overly explain this situation or footnote it in every issue. I'm trying to remember if Levitz got around to having Gym and Vi truly have it out, giving Vi the closure she desperately deserves. (Vi and Yera had some closure during 5YL, but I'm undecided if that counts.) Something I'll watch for in my re-read.

Thanks for the great show, guys! Sean, that was a brilliant observation about Reed and shielding. DANG!

Ultimate Spider-Man was the best series, hands down. Those 2 issues Sean mentioned are my highlights, too, in a series that was consistently great month after month, I can't begin to nail down a favorite issue. But another noteworthy moment in the same vein is Black Cat flirting with Spider-Man, and when she finally gets him to take off his mask, she freaks because she's an adult while he's a teenager, and she literally throws up from the shock. It's hilarious and breaks the expected ending all to pieces.

Ooo, how about the issue with Elektra and other guest stars, who one by one get thrown out of a window onto the same car, like 4 times!

When it comes to the survivors on the life raft, I noticed that there's only 3 women. All of them are white and blonde. Sue, Carol, and Thor. And then we lose Sue. I shouldn't think about that too much, cuz it gets icky!!!

Thank you for another great episode, Beyondists!Tim Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01930515973080943337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4651613396162106161.post-61372572886809213662020-04-08T05:45:28.102-07:002020-04-08T05:45:28.102-07:00And I'm the LAST person I'd expect to catc...And I'm the LAST person I'd expect to catch such things!Tim Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01930515973080943337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4651613396162106161.post-71737405212340151222020-04-08T05:26:48.523-07:002020-04-08T05:26:48.523-07:00Have to do some research on which iron man version...Have to do some research on which iron man version that is. I agree that Valeria's opening speech needed to be an homage to "Everything dies". Ah well.

It was great to hear your love of Power Pack. Both of your choices are excellent, while I edge Snark Wars slightly ahead. Another fave of mine is issue #36 featuring Franklin and Master Mold. Then in the All Ages version, PP: Day One issue #2 gets me every time. There's something about Whitey in that story now that I'm a parent.

About the cover, I think I know which figure you thought was Infamous Iron Man, but that design didn't exist yet since that's a post-SW Doctor Doom. Love Roberto/Sam stepping up to do something. So cold how T'Challa tried to kill Namor. Sue is the best secret agent. Love love love.

I also am down with Spider-Man being the one to save reality. Consider the premise of Hickman's storyline is "Everything dies." One of Slott's tenets for Spider-Man is "Nobody dies." That contrast right there would have been great to see here.

Ok, I have a not-so-secret question for you guys. With the "All is Doom" talk, do you think Doom believes in (looks up word) Solipsism, that only he and his mind exist? If we take that hypothesis, that explains how Doom approaches everything! I have some counter thoughts on this theory, but really wonder what you guys think, too. And I'm sure Professor Middleton would exorcise me for daring to suggest such a theory.

Wonderful episode, Beyondists!Tim Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01930515973080943337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4651613396162106161.post-17658753396117281472020-01-31T15:36:55.598-08:002020-01-31T15:36:55.598-08:00Beyondists? And I remember this WI didn't hold a candle to the original. That's not to condemn the whole series tho!Dan Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07297334574887588688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4651613396162106161.post-47855069531025437132020-01-12T18:08:25.979-08:002020-01-12T18:08:25.979-08:00Oh goody, the spammers have found your site. I hop...Oh goody, the spammers have found your site. I hope me posting comments didn't do that. :(

Another great episode, Sean and Dr G! I need to give these issues a re-read, but a couple of random thoughts.

Does Sun God look a lot like Sentry to either of you? That made me not take the Great Society completely at face value, that there may be a darker side to them to parallel the Illuminati.

I LOVED your discussion on what other analogs they should have faced. Younger versions of them would certainly have been intriguing, except Namor is so compared to the rest, a few years' difference doesn't really affect him. Except for the late 80s and his 90s series, there's not a lot of "heroic" time periods for Namor, so he's pretty static unless they deliberately amped up the analogs heroism. Still interesting.

But what you're also saying, having a group that chose "hope", means a group that did not mind-wipe Captain America and kick him out. It would be a group that kept him around for all the reasons Steve said back in the initial story arc. Oh man, that would have been BRUTAL!

Time is running out. But I'll be here! Thanks, Beyondists!Tim Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01930515973080943337noreply@blogger.com
