Miss Fury - A Tribute to June Tarpé Mills

Since there are so many prompt lists out there each October I like to pick and choose from each sometimes combining prompts from multiple lists/days.

For this years activities I am kicking it off with the Cartoonist Kayfabe prompt for #kayfabetober Golden Age

To represent the Golden Age of comics I am doing a tribute to one of these few female cartoonists of the Golden Age, June Tarpé Mills. While she had created characters such as the Purple Zombie, Daredevil Barry Finn, and Mann of India by far her most famous character was Miss Fury. Miss Fury (originally titled Black Fury) ran as a syndicated newspaper comic strip for April 1941 to December 1951. The strip was full of action, adventure, and romance. The strip would introduce elements of contemporary fashion design to the work as well as more progressive ideas about the roles of women in society. Particularly, Marla Drake would adopt a young boy being a single unwed mother. A fact that got a few newspapers to drop the trip.

Personally, I love her art work. I first came across it about two years ago and was blown away. Her inclusion of fashion and her rendering of the female form easily puts her in the ranks of the good girl artists of the era. Her inclusion of fashion in her work is also very clear and beautiful.

Happy Birthday Jack Kirby! Process & Inspiration

Happy Birthday Jack Kirby! Process & Inspiration

Join me as I celebrate what would have been the 106th Birthday of Jack Kirby, the King of Comics. Jack's life story is the life story of the American comic from the Golden Age of the 40’s to the Image Revolution of the 90’s. It is a story of triumphs and tragedies of one of the most influential artists in American comics of the 20th Century. Influences felt even today with last 20 years of superhero movies and television.

To celebrate the work of this artistic great and to help hone my skills, on my journey as a cartoonist, I created this piece. Titled “Jack Kirby Gods and Monsters”, I composed it of penciled pieces by Jack Kirby scanned from the internet and collated together into a mural. I digitally finished it in Adobe Fresco using G-Pen Vector Brush and KirbyKrackle brush.

Thanks to all of those who have liked the work so far and welcome to any new readers. If you like this series and wish to help me keep it going you can make a one time donation at the Ko-Fi site or purchase Merch at my Red Bubble store. Also make sure to follow my YouTube channel. I post a weekly speed drawing and art process video where I provide a behind the scenes of the making of each week's comic strip.

Secret Sagas of the Multiverse: Masters of the Universe (Wave 1)

In 1982, Mattle Toys launched a space barbarian line of toys filled with a strange assortment of fantasy warriors sci fi gear and vehicles called Masters of the Universe. With an assortment of toys, cartoons, comics, movies, and more my 7 year old self had been transported to the techno fantastic world if Eternia. There I thrilled to the adventures of He-Man, the Most Powerful Man in the Universe, as he and his strange assortment of Heroic Warriors defended Eternia and the secrets of Castle Grayskuall from Skeletor, the Lord of Destruction, and his monsters menagerie of Evil Warriors.

More than 35 years later, I still love He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. To show my love I have been creating a series of digital art pieces featuring these Warriors of Eternia. This post is part 1 of an ongoing art tribute to the toy line featuring the characters from Wave 1 of the series.
